Education in British Primary School—Parents and teachers

But I have to change the channel to BBC, hope to remind of the study in England and also want you to enjoy my report. Thank you!

In England, parents play an important role in children’s education. At home, they’re not only teachers of their children, but also their intimate friends. They have many ways to help their children, such as sharing experiences, encouraging reading, leading children to do a number of activities.

They help their children have good behaviors. For example, my hostess likes the children to be polite and to behave, she tells her 2 children not to complain, never say they’re bored. She always reminds them not to interrupt when other’s talking. And she also tells them to say “please” when they require something, asks them to eat properly and have good table manners.

My host Paul likes his children to play in the garden, he likes them to go outside, to use imagination to make up games. He said it is a good opportunity for them to have creativity. He often takes 2 children to the beach to get some branches, stones, wood and something else to decorate the children’s paintings.

At home, parents give the children wholly freedom to play. Because they think the children could gain creativity from play. The children have enough time to play. They only do their homework not more than twice a week. And they would finish doing it in not more than fifteen minutes. I stayed there nearly thirty days, but I never heard their parents ask them to study. They enjoy their weekends in various ways, some take their children to barbecue, some take them to visit historical interests, some make friends or family gathering at home. Life is colorful and each of them is happy every day. The children could see more, know more and enjoy more because they have no heavy study loads and the economy of the society is prosperous and wealthy.

In England, parents care about the children’s feeling. They like to show their love and care directly. They give a lot of hugs to their children. They often say “I love you.” They say “ Good night! Have a good sleep!” and kiss their children before they go to bed. In the morning, especially at the weekend, they give them a chance to snuggle in bed. They like to talk to their children and show interests on what the children are doing.

Parents do a lot of things at school. Many schools have PTA---Parents Teachers Association. It’s mainly the parents run it, they volunteer their offer to help and to raise money for the school. They have cake sells and summer fair and other activities, try to make much more money for school. The parents organize PTA, and the teachers just help them. All the parents are the members of PTA. Parents help school in a number of ways, including assisting teachers with reading activities, accompanying class visits and helping generally in classrooms. Some parents help to do some work in the school library. Parents attend formal parent’s evenings twice a year, in terms of autumn and spring. If they wish to speak to a class teacher or headteacher at another time, they usually make an appointment.
Parents get a written report from school in summer term. They have the right to request
amendment of any facts which they feel incorrect.

In England, I feel the children are lucky because the parents and the teachers do their best hand in hand to make a better prospect for the next generation.

Next is mainly about teachers. There are three strands: workloads, status and stress.

Workloads

It is known that the British teachers work creative. Not all schools have textbooks. They have the National Strategies. And they possess a sufficient and thorough knowledge of the Strategies. They track lessons being taught through long, medium and short term planning. They believe that planning in this way could assist in securing continuity and progression. Thus could they make clear objectives with the pupils so that there is a shared understanding of the learning which will take place. And the work was planned thoroughly and differentiated so that individual children make progress in every session. An excellent teacher means more efforts and more hard work. It really needs the creative work in their daily teaching.

The teachers I interviewed almost work all day long in the classroom. They teach every subject of their classes. The rest they have maybe is the tea break they have in the Staff Room. I couldn’t imagine the detail quantity of their work. I only know my fatigue after several 40 minutes. I feel a sense of satisfaction with the workload after comparing with them, though they have teaching assistants.

They act the versatile roles in teaching. The school I visited only have 12 teachers. They teach the different subjects of their classes, such as literacy, mathematics, science, ICT, geography and so on. They must have a full range of knowledge to cater for the needs. They really play vital roles in every different lesson.

Status

During the communication with one of the teachers in Field Place First School, we discussed the status of the teacher. She told me that their social status and income are just the medium level. They could not compare with the lawyers and the dentists who are wealthy. Their monthly income is only about £1,500. After I heard of this, I became to think about the price of the goods here. We all have the rich experiences of purchase. And we also have a roughly understanding of the price of some consuming goods. They seem too cheap after we replace the British currency into our yuan. That is to say a fine-leathered beautiful pair of boots only need 40 yuan after replacement. They pay less than one yuan to buy a big box of milk. How cheap! We could see the social welfare of the UK. So the economical status of British teacher is better, I think.

And the media is on the side of the teacher. I saw several articles which support the teachers’ social status. The topic of this article is Teachers 'deserve' professional respect. ( Let’s listen) The positive attitude of the media towards the teacher would be helpful to the teachers’ work and social status.

Stress

Though the media and society support the teachers’ work, they still feel stress from the hard work. Based on a review of international research, it is concluded that teacher stress is a real phenomenon and that high levels are reliably associated with a range of causal factors, including those intrinsic to teaching, individual vulnerability and systemic influences. Let’s listen to this report.

I don’t know the best way to solve this complicate problem. But I know the life is so limited to each of us. So why not keep ourselves healthy and happy everyday. Try our best to do better! Do enjoy ourselves!

That’s all for my report. Thanks a lot!
